The 10/40 Window...

Is a term coined by Christian missionary strategist Luis Bush in 1990 [3 years after we began working in Nigeria and in India] to refer to those regions of the eastern hemisphere located between 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator. It describes a general area of the world that is purported to have the highest level of socioeconomic challenges and least access to the Christian message and Christian resources on the planet.

The 10/40 Window concept highlights these 3 elements: a geographic area of the world with great poverty, low quality of life, combined with lack of access to Christian resources.

The Window forms a band encompassing Saharan and Northern Africa, the Middle East, as well as almost all of Asia. Roughly 2/3 of the world’s population lives inside the 10/40 Window, and is populated by people who are predominantly Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Animist, Jewish or Atheist. Many governments inside the 10/40 Window are formally or informally opposed to Christian work of any kind within their borders. (Ref. Wikipedia)

Introduction...
Formed from the merger of the British colony of the Gold Coast and the Togoland trust territory, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence, which was accomplished in 1957. Ghana endured a long series of coups before Lt. Jerry Rawlings took power in 1981 and banned political parties. After approving a new constitution and restoring multiparty politics in 1992, Rawlings won presidential elections in 1992 and 1996, but was constitutionally prevented from running for a third term in 2000. John Kufuor succeeded him and was reelected in 2004. John Atta Mills took over as head of state in early 2009.

Geography...
Ghana is located in coastal Sub-Saharan West Africa, covering 238, 533 sq km (slightly smaller than the State of Oregon) bordered by Cote de Ivoire to the west, Togo to the east, and Burkina Faso to the north.

People...
Ghana’s population numbers 24,339,838, ranking it 47th in the world. Estimates for Ghana explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; resulting in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality, higher death rates, lower population growth rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected.

Our Ministry...
In 1979, we accepted an invitation to establish a college level Bible training curriculum for a group of indigenous churches. In 1980, Hope Institute of Theology began it’s first year of instruction in the capital city of Accra. After 4 years as resident missionaries, we handed over the full-time operation of the school to the nationals, returning from time to time for guidance and encouragement. In 1999, we returned to conduct Pastors & Ministers Conferences, Women’s Conferences and Teaching Seminars.

Introduction...
Through the 19th century, British influence and control grew over what would become Nigeria, and Africa’s most populous country. Nigeria gained it’s independence in 1960. After years of military dictatorship rule, the people adopted a new constitution in 1999, paving the way for a democratic civilian society. The government continues to face the daunting task of reforming a petroleum-based economy (whose revenues have been squandered through corruption and mismanagement), and institutionalizing democracy. In addition, Nigeria continues to experience longstanding ethnic and religious tensions, especially in the middle belt along the 10th parallel. Nigeria is currently experiencing its longest period of civilian rule since its independence. The general elections of April 2007 marked the first civilian-to-civilian transfer of power in the country’s history.

Geography...
Nigeria is located in coastal Sub-Saharan West Africa, encompassing 923, 768 sq km (roughly 1 1/3 the size of the State of Texas) bordered by Benin, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. The country straddles the 10 Degree North Latitude line, placing Northern Nigeria just inside the 10/40 Window.

People...
Nigeria is the strongest and most populated nation in Africa numbering, 152,217,341 (2010 estimates), ranking it 8th in the world. Like the continent as a whole, Nigeria is divided into the predominately Muslim North, and the predominately Christian South, with its population split almost evenly at 50% Muslim, 40% Christian and 10% Tribal or Indigenous religions. The three largest and most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.

Our Ministry...
God did not send us to just any place in Nigeria. He sent us to Northern Nigeria where the people are overwhelmingly Muslim, and have been for more than a millennium. He sent us to Jos, where the 10th parallel runs right through the middle of the city. He sent us to a city where the name of Jesus was not commonly known until the early 1960’s.  In 1987, with Jos as our headquarters, we began city-wide crusades, Annual Pastors & Ministers Conferences, Women’s Conferences, Leadership and Ministry Teaching Seminars, as well as village evangelism and medical missions.

Introduction...
Home to the Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its  commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early 18th century and colonized by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread non-violent resistance. India consists of 28 states and 7 union territories with a parliamentary system of democracy. The Indian economy is  the world’s 11th largest and has the 4th largest purchasing power, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world; however, it still suffers from poverty, illiteracy, corruption, disease, and malnutrition. India is a nuclear weapon state and has the 3rd largest standing army in the world.

Geography...

India is the 7th largest country in the world by geographical area. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of 7,517 kilometers. Bordered by Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north; Bangladesh and Burma to the east. All but the southern most tip and Sri Lanka is inside the 10/40 Window.

People...
The 2nd most populous country with over 1.18 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Four major religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region’s diverse culture.

Our Ministry...
In the world’s 2nd most populated country where only 2.3% is Christian, the need to raise up church leaders is enormous. In 1987, we began regional Teaching Seminars around Maharashtra State which have now consolidated into a singular Annual Pastors & Ministers Conference in Pune. We also conduct Women’s Conferences and Leadership and Ministry Teaching Seminars, working with various Bible Schools. Over the years, we have worked with orphanages, and in 2006 we funded a well to deliver water to an entire village.
